Adding to the handheld gimbal stabilizers after last year’s Movi introduction, DJI has ventured into the market with the Ronin. It is designed to deliver stabilization for a number of cameras ranging from the Red Epic to Micro Four Thirds Cameras.
The gimbal tech in the Ronin is based on the Zenmuse gimbals found on DJI’s quadcopter products. Like the Movi, the DJI Ronin has a single operator and dual operator mode. The single operator mode uses DJI’s SmoothTrack technology, which allows single camera operators to easily translate movements into smooth gimbal movements.
The big feature that sets the Ronin apart from other handheld gimbals on the market now is the auto-calibration feature. As DJI puts it, “After balancing the camera, simply tapping the auto calibration button on the DJI Ronin smartphone app and the gimbal will automatically tune all stabilizing motors, ensuring filmmakers get the smoothest possible footage.”
Monitors or other accessories can be easily installed on the top bar using the accessory mount. With the DJI LightBridge installed, production teams can monitor the Ronin’s footage in full HD (1920 x 1080p at 30 frames-per-second) from up to 1.05 miles away with a less than 80 millisecond delay.
The on-board battery provides over 4 hours run time for the Ronin’s electronic gimbal.
The Ronin is planned for Q2 at an undisclosed price.
